For the long weekend, we took a quick drive down to Birmingham and had a great time!

Since Joe also had off on Friday, we drove down Thursday evening and stayed at The Hotel Highland in the Five Points area of downtown Birmingham. I always like staying downtown when I visit a city, even if that means paying extra. I like to be able to walk out the front door and have things for us to do. And The Highland definitely fit the bill!

After getting settled, we walked a block over to this great pizza place called Little Italy Pizza & Pints…note, the hotel lobby has coupons for this place. Score! It was nothing fancy but it was delicious and kid friendly!

The next morning it was time to head to the McWane Science Museum! This place is no joke, the BEST museum I’ve ever been to! And I’m an adult who has been to all of the Smithsonians!

We decided to walk the ten blocks to get there since the weather was so gorgeous. It’s a great city for walking, sidewalks the whole way and lots of friendly people to point you in the right direction.

Now back to the museum….if you have kids (or are a kid at heart) this place is really a must see! There are three floors and each one is just incredible.

The first floor featured a bunch of hands on science activities that kids can enjoy but the thing my kids were really excited to check out was the Itty Bitty City on the next floor!

We spent a good chunk of time here! My kids are huge Mister Rodgers and Daniel Tiger fans so getting to play make believe or “neighbors” as Louis and Judy call it was a dream come true for them.

Once we dragged them away from this floor, we headed over to the dinosaur exhibit and finished at the under water exhibit.

After sufficiently wearing the kids out we waited for the trolley and headed back to the hotel to pick up the car ($4 to park in the overnight garage!! Woot woot!)  and drive home to Huntsville.

It was an awesome trip and we can’t wait to head down there again soon!

This is the look of one happy lady!
