So I’m writing this on a rainy day here in Huntsville and feeling a bit blah about the state of things so it might be best to take all this with a (large) grain of salt…
If you had told 18 year old me that I would raise my family in Alabama, I would’ve said you were sadly mistaken and yet here I sit in the home I own in Huntsville. That being said, there are times when I cannot believe how lucky I am that we not only bought a home before turning 30 but that we get to live down the street from my wonderful parents and yet there are those other times….
This is kind of where the ‘misplaced’ in my online identity comes to play. I have spoken before about my life as an Army brat and how I felt most at home when we lived on the East Coast (specifically Baltimore) but recently, I have realized that what I’m missing most from my life is the ability to easily travel. Huntsville is charming and booming, quite honestly, but the airport leaves much to be desired and everything within a four hour drive is pretty similar to Huntsville in my opinion. Even more than the ease of hopping in the car in Baltimore and being in a completely different city with a unique identity, sports teams, food, etc–what I REALLY miss is public transportation. God, never thought I’d miss the city bus, taxi and Metro but that’s really what it is. No city outside of Atlanta around here, has a well oiled Metro system. I guess I was spoiled with that up North and even more so during our time in Germany.
Now none of this has any real shot of being solved, but it just feels good to write it and if you find yourself feeling misplaced just know that I get it–unfortunately, I think a lot of people don’t get to live in their dream location or maybe you do, but you’re in debt up to your eyeballs to pay for that dream house or you’re desperately wishing to be near family. My point is, most of us rarely get it all so when I find myself pining for a life in Frankfurt or Washington D.C. or wherever Instagram is making me feel like would be better (let’s be honest here! lol), I’m going to remember that I’ve got it pretty good and home is wherever I’m with them.
